We cordially invite to the House of History for the “Between the truth and stylization What do family photos tell us about fashion” lecture, that will be given by an art historian, Zuzanna Żubka-Chmielewska.
About the lecture:
Today, when browsing old albums we often think: “pretty dress, ugly dress”, but clothing carries much more meaning. It can reveal the tastes, financial situation and even character of people immortalized on light-sensitive paper. Children’s photographs reveal some secrets of history of upbringing and elegant portraits reveal the secrets of beauty of the times gone by. Photographs taken outside an atelier tell the story of past customs and show us what the everyday clothes looked like. When old albums are accompanied by family stories and old letters, we get the recipe of a true time travel. How to prepare for it, how to embark on it, and what we should be aware of – Zuzanna Żubka-Chmielewska will answer these, taking us into her family’s world.
