Meeting on the anniversary of the “April Operation”

On April 29th, 2016 we invite you to come at.18:00 to the House of History, where a meeting dedicated to the anniversary of the “April Operation” in the Nowy Sącz ghetto will take place.
On April 29th, 2016 we want to recall the tragic events that happened over 70 years ago in the Nowy Sącz ghetto. At the end of April 1942 the Germans occupying the city murdered 300 people on the Jewish cemetery at Rybacka str. On the same day the drunk soldiers entered the ghetto where, without any reason, they shot almost 100 people more.
We want to commemorate the people, who lost their lives in a senseless operation dictated by a whim of people drunk on alcohol, power and violence. We invite all of you to commemorate the victims of the tragic last days of April 1942 also by placing candles and flowers under the plaque on the house at Franciszkańska str. in Nowy Sącz, that also reminds of this tragedy.
The meeting will begin at 18:00 in the House of History at 21 Pijarska str.
W programie:
– Introduction by Łukasz Połomski. He will remind us how the crime happened, and also tell us the history (intertwined with these days) of a dentist from Nowy Sącz ghetto, one of whose belongings found its way into the collections of the Shtetl of Tsanz
– Book promotion of „Remembering for the Future”. The book was created within the “Shtetl of Tsanz – Young Ambassadors of Tolerance” project and tells the story of Jewish people of Nowy Sącz and Poland, about multicultural Sądecczyzna region, about the problem of hate speech in contemporary world and more;
– Screening of the movie “In Ahasuerus’ footsteps” (around 18:45). A movie directed by Barbara Szewczyk presents the course, that the Young Ambassadors of Tolerance took part in during the project, about their path towards better understanding of the “others” of the region former neighbours of Polish inhabitants of Sądecczyzna and how important empathy, tolerance and dialog are for future harmonious co-existence.

The event, movie and book are realized within the “Shtetl of Tsanz – Young Ambassadors of Tolerance” project carried out within the “Citizens for Democracy” programme, financed by EEA Funds, coordinated in Poland by the Stefan Batory Foundation and Polish Children and Youth Foundation.
