In 2001 Poland was visited by a group of American students who wrote a play about a Polish woman who saved Jewish children during the war. Day-to-day after years of being forgotten Irena Sendlerowa became a hero of the media and a symbol of all those who were brave enough to oppose evil.
To organize help, an efficient system, money and a network of people willing to risk their lives were needed. As professor Bartoszewski, reminisced: “it was easier to find an apartment that will shelter a weapon case than one that will harbor a Jewish person”.
Irena Sendlerowa, a woman who undoubtedly did great things, deserving admiration and did them in the hardest times, emerges in this book from among a group of people who were connected by a common fate – the rescuers and the rescued. The ones who gave shelter and the ones seeking shelter.
It’s a story of extraordinary Poles and of hundreds of children saved by them.
