14th Labyrinth of History: The Golden Age – The Jagiellon Era
| On Oct06,2019It is our genuine pleasure to invite you to the 14th “Labyrinth of History” entitled “The Golden Age – The Jagiellon Era”, which will take place on 21.10–26.10.2019!The time when the last two kings of the Jagiellon dynasty – Sigismund I and Sigismund Augustus – ruled was an incredibly significant period also called the golden age. In 1569 the union between Poland and Lithuania was signed, which created the dual state of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. “The Polish Kingdom and the Great Lithuanian Duchy is one inseparable and indiscrete body and also an indiscrete but one and solid Commonwealth that from two states and nations was made and molded into one people“. The Polish-Lithuanian state covered over 1 million square kilometers and become one of the biggest countries in Europe.
In that time the executionist movement of the Polish nobility tried to push through important reforms of the state. It was also the time of Reformation and later of Counter-Reformation, with both currents strongly influencing the religion of the Polish society. The foreign policy had no shortage of tensions and conflicts. The Jagiellonians had to negotiate with the Habsburgs and stand up to Moscow.
The field of art and culture saw the expansion of the Renaissance style, and with it numerous artistic and cultural foundations, that resulted in creation of exquisite works of art including the glorious Sigismund’s chapel in the Wawel Cathedral. Also the literature saw a great influx with such names as Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski, Jan Kochanowski, Mikołaj Rej, Łukasz Górnicki.
The Labyrinth of History is financially supported by the Marshal’s Office of the Lesser Poland Voivodship and the City of Nowy Sącz. The programme is organized by the Nomina Rosae Foundation, SOKÓŁ Lesser-Poland’s Culture Centre and the Voivodship Pedagogical Library in Nowy Sącz.
